no more mr. nice guyThis week I was privileged to get one of the first physical copies of No More Mr. Nice Guy by local hip hop artist Killa Kel, also known as Mr. Keldric Bonton. To say that the music was good is a drastic understatement. Kel’s style is quickly headed in the direction of timeless, as he uses plays on words and topics that hip hop used to be about. His flow is authentic and quickly catches the ear of the listener. If you look on Twitter and Facebook its apparent how excellent Kel’s work is. Fans are raving about it and how much they can’t help but listen to it. I personally was beginning to believe that our fair lady Hip-Hop was in fact dead and gone but thanks to artist like Killa Kel she’s starting to show signs of life and is looking to return in rare form. With this mixtape he took us back to the days when hip-hop narrated a lifestyle, instead of defining one as it does so often today. Killa Kel’s music is in fact life imitating art, imitating life. Thank you for taking us back to the basics, sir!

Get Ready: A Response

Honestly I love the hypocrisy of the student body at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Recently there has been a flurry of issues picked with the Greek community for various reasons. We have been ridiculed for our allegedly irresponsible behavior and less than stellar academic performance. I find this somewhat funny, considering the fact that the people that bash the Greeks are the same ones that are willing to spend half of their night and all of their refund check to get into a Greek party. These people that criticize our academics aren’t on any Dean’s or President’s list, so where do they find room to address our performance? The situation has gone so far to even target the motives and inspirations of those of us that serve as officers on RSOs and the SGA. There are no excuses for slack in grades, however many of us have 3 to 4 times the average student’s workload, yet many of us maintain decent GPAs in comparison to the non-greek.

I waited and meditated on my decision to write this post because of the way it may be percieved by the public. After careful consideration…I DON’T CARE! As a man of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. I am descended from a long line of fearless, pioneering brothers that believe in supporting the misrepresented and disenfranchised. As a Greek it would weigh heavily on my conscience to sit back and allow my Greek brothers and sisters to be slandered by some bitter, misinformed party that would rather be concerned with our short falling, more so than their own affairs. No one is perfect and too often is the bad remembered more than the good done.
To conclude, I advise the campus to get ready…we can show you better than we can tell you about the purpose we serve on this campus, or any campus. See our philanthropy, benefit from it and enjoy it because that’s what its for. Look to our tenacity and work ethic as a template for yourselves, because we believe in living the example of model citizens. Envy our bonds and strive to seek your own, fraternally or otherwize because companionship in one’s life is a vital aspect of true humanity. Sweep in front of your own front door before you step to our humble abode. This post holds no malice, nor does it bear intentions to offend, only to respond to an unfairly biased set of critics and enlighten…one word at a time.
